Superfoods for a Healthy Heart

Keeping your heart healthy isn’t just about avoiding foods and activities that are bad for you- it’s also about eating foods rich in nutrients, fibre and healthy fats! It seems like the term “superfoods” is one of the latest buzzwords when we talk about healthy eating habits. The truth is, when incorporated into a diet balanced in lean protein, whole grains, fruits, vegetables and low-fat dairy products, these nutrition powerhouses are a great part of a heart healthy diet!

So what foods should you be incorporating into your diet to keep your ticker happy in the years to come? Here are some of our favourites:

Salmon

With tons of omega-3 fatty acids, salmon can help to lower the risk of arrhythmia and plaque build-up in the arteries.

Oatmeal

Steel cut oats in particular (not the sugary instant oatmeal in the stores!) are a great source of soluble fibre which can help to lower cholesterol.

Berries

Blueberries, strawberries and other berries containing antioxidants called anthocyanin may help to decrease blood pressure and dilate blood vessels.

Dark chocolate

Some studies have shown that daily chocolate consumption could reduce nonfatal heart attacks and stroke in people at high risk for these problems. Before you get too excited, ‘dark’ is the key word here (meaning at least 60 – 70% cocoa)- milk chocolate and most candy bars don’t make the cut when it comes to protecting your heart.

If you’re new to superfoods, this infographic is a great guide and starting place for people looking to take care of their hearts through a healthy diet. Remember to always speak with your doctor before making any major changes to your diet!
