Celebrating National Grandparents Day with Joy

National Grandparents Day falls on the second Sunday after Labour Day, and it arrives during that first cool week when Calgary trees start turning gold. If your grandchildren live across town or across an ocean, the day can feel bittersweet. It does not have to.

A short call, a shared recipe, or a photo pulled from a shoebox can carry more weight than any expensive gift.

Start with a Story Only You Can Tell

Every family has stories that live only in one person's memory. What your street looked like in the winter when you turned ten. How your parents met.

The first job that paid you in coin, not bills. Write one down, or record it on your phone in three minutes. Send it to a grandchild with a note that says, "For you."

If writing feels heavy, the Alzheimer Society of Canada suggests using photos as prompts. Pull out an old album. Point to a face. Talk. That is the story.

Bridge the Distance With Small, Regular Contact

One phone call a month builds a habit. One weekly text builds a relationship. Ask your grandchild to teach you how to send a voice memo. It takes five minutes and gives you both a new way to stay close between visits.

For grandchildren in Vancouver, Toronto, or overseas, try a shared online game. Chess, checkers, or even a cooperative puzzle app can turn thirty quiet minutes into something you both look forward to. It can be a simple way to connect on National Grandparents Day.

If you have grandchildren nearby in Calgary, invite one to help you rake leaves in exchange for hot chocolate. That's the memory they will keep.

Activities That Work Regardless of Mobility

You do not need to be spry to make Grandparents' Day feel special.

A shared cooking video call, where you both make the same pancakes at the same time in different kitchens, works beautifully. So does reading aloud. Pick a chapter book, split it in half, and take turns.

A few more ideas, gentle on knees and hips:

  • Sort family photos together over a video call, and let your grandchild ask questions.
  • Start a "grandparent journal": one question a week, answered by voice or by hand.
  • Teach a family recipe over speakerphone while they cook.
  • Plant something. Bulbs go in the ground this month in Alberta and bloom next April.

Small. Repeatable. Real.

Making Memories That Outlast the Day

The best celebrations aren't tied to a single Sunday. They start there and keep going. Choose one small ritual and hold it, even loosely. A monthly call. A birthday card written by hand.

A photo swap on the first of every month. Consistency of the everyday kind builds a bond your grandchildren will remember long after you're gone.

Family Connection Across Calgary

At Senior Helpers Calgary West, our caregivers support seniors across Calgary. They provide companionship, transportation to family gatherings, and help setting up video calls with grandchildren near and far. These services can make National Grandparents Day and other family moments easier to enjoy.

If a parent or grandparent could use a hand staying connected this fall, contact us and we'll listen first, then help build a plan that fits your family.
