8 Ways to Celebrate Grandparents When You're Busy

National Grandparents Day falls on September 13 this year, right in the middle of back-to-school schedules, work picking back up after summer, and calendars filling up fast. If you're the family caregiver juggling a lot of moving pieces, the last thing you need is a perfect celebration. Celebrating grandparents doesn't have to mean planning something elaborate. What matters most is taking a moment to make the day feel special. Here are eight small, meaningful ways to make it count without adding more to your week.

1. Send a Voice Note in the Morning

A one-minute voice message from you and your kids, sent on the drive to school, can mean more than most people realize. Grandparents may replay those messages, especially when they hear grandchildren’s voices changing so quickly. It’s a simple way of celebrating grandparents, even when everyone is in a different place.

2. Order Groceries or a Meal to Their Door

A delivery-app order of their favourite meal or a small grocery drop can cover Sunday dinner without a trip out. If you’re nearby, cook once at home and drop off a container. For grandparents who live farther away, most Canadian grocery chains offer delivery, making it easy to send a meal or groceries from a distance.

3. Pin a Photo to Their Wall (Digitally or Otherwise)

A framed picture in the mail is a wonderful gift. A shared digital photo frame can bring that same feeling to their living room, with new photos sent from your phone throughout the year. Celebrating grandparents can be as simple as sharing family moments from near or far. Set one up once, and every Grandparents Day after that becomes a little easier.

4. Book a Walk in a Park You Both Like

If your parent can still walk comfortably, thirty minutes along a familiar route with coffee at the end can be a lovely way to spend the day. The Government of Canada's physical activity guidance also shares research on how walking can benefit brain health and mood, if another reason to take a stroll would help.

5. Have the Grandchildren Make One Small Thing

Kids are always creating art. Pick a favorite piece, have them write a sentence about their grandparent on the back, and mail it or drop it off. It doesn’t need to be new; even a drawing from last week works.

6. Set Up a Standing Video Call Instead of a One-Off

A regular Sunday video call can be more meaningful than a big Grandparents Day gesture. Start a weekly call on September 13 as a simple way of celebrating grandparents, then keep it going. Twenty minutes is plenty, especially for younger kids.

7. Share a Family Memory in Writing

If your parent has trouble remembering recent events, older memories may still bring a smile. Write down a favorite childhood story, print it, and send it to them. Even three short paragraphs can become a meaningful keepsake. Your own children may enjoy reading it someday, too.

8. Book Yourself Even 60 Minutes of Backup

Sometimes the best gift for celebrating grandparents is being present without being rushed. If you can bring in a caregiver for one hour so you're not glancing at your phone during Sunday dinner, do that.
