Safety Month: Home Audit Checklist for Seniors

June is a natural time to take stock of the spaces where you spend most of your time. A home safety audit doesn't need to be a big project. Done room by room, it's a straightforward walk through familiar spaces with fresh eyes, and it can make a real difference. Families across Port Credit, Long Branch, and Cooksville have found that an hour or two spent on this kind of review helps them feel more confident at home.

Entrance and Hallways

Start at the front door and work inward. Check that the threshold has no raised edge you could catch a toe on. Look at the lighting. Is it bright enough to read clearly at night? A simple motion-sensor light near the entrance and in the hallway is worth the modest investment. If you use a cane or walker, make sure there is enough clear floor space to move comfortably without having to navigate around furniture. Remove any loose mats or runners from high-traffic paths, as they are a leading cause of falls at home.

Kitchen

Frequently used items should be at counter height or on accessible shelves, never above shoulder level or requiring crouching to reach. Check that your smoke detector has a fresh battery and test it. Health Canada recommends testing detectors monthly. Confirm your carbon monoxide detector is functioning too, and keep a fire extinguisher within easy reach.

Bathroom

This room carries the highest risk. Grab bars beside the toilet and inside the tub or shower make a significant difference and can be professionally installed in an afternoon. A non-slip mat inside the tub or shower is crucial. Keep the floor outside clear. Check your hot water temperature and reduce it to 49 degrees Celsius or below to prevent scalding. A nightlight is important for any visits after dark.

Bedroom and Living Areas

Walk the path from your bed to the bathroom in dim light and think about what could trip you. Extension cords crossing foot traffic zones, furniture with sharp corners at hip height, and chairs that are difficult to rise from all deserve attention. Keep a lamp or flashlight within reach of your bed. In the living area, check that your telephone or mobile device is always within reach, especially if you live alone in Markland Wood, Alderwood, or Eringate-Centennial-West Deane.

Stairways

Both handrails should feel solid with no wobble. Lighting on stair treads should be bright enough to clearly see each step. Keep stairs completely clear of stored items.
