Joining a Fall Class or Club: Where to Start

Once the cruise ships leave and the rain settles over the Saanich Peninsula, much of the social life moves indoors. Recreation centres fill up with pottery wheels and pickleball nets. Library meeting rooms host book talks on weekday afternoons. Senior Helpers Victoria understands that fall activities for seniors provide a wonderful opportunity for group engagement after the fun of summer outdoors.

Match the Group to Your Energy

Some people want a lively room, and others do better with four people around a table, so think about which setting leaves you feeling good on the drive home.

If you like busy places, consider drop-in fitness classes, choirs, or dance classes. If you'd rather keep it calm, try a small book club or a bridge group, or a birdwatching walk along the shore. The time of day matters too. Morning programs are ideal for early risers and save you from the drive home on dark, rainy evenings when even short trips feel longer.

Start with just one group. Trying three at once can wear you out before any of them sticks.

Good Places to Look on the South Island

Public library branches run free programs for adults, from author readings to technology help. Municipal recreation centres publish guides with classes that include fall activities for seniors. Seniors' centres and community associations post their own schedules on bulletin boards and websites.

If you're not sure where to begin, 211 Canada is a free service that helps people find community, social, and health programs in their area. It can point you to groups you haven't heard of.

Walking In for the First Time

New groups can feel intimidating, even for people who were outgoing throughout their working lives, and the first ten minutes in an unfamiliar room tend to be the hardest part of the season.

Email or phone the organizer beforehand and let them know you're coming.

Ask if there's anything to bring. Arrive a little early so you can find a seat and chat with someone before the room fills up.

After the session, thank the leader on your way out, and they'll likely remember your name the following week.

What a Weekly Group Adds

The Government of Canada's report on the social isolation of older adults examines what puts them at risk of isolation, what helps protect against it, and the consequences of losing touch with their communities.

A weekly group gives the months some shape. People notice when you're away. You have something to look forward to on a grey Wednesday, and you'll likely leave with a phone number or two.
