Scrapbooking for Seniors

Topics: Active Seniors

Scrapbooking is a great and fun way to document family history, childhood keepsakes, and your most precious memories. The best part about scrapbooking is you don’t necessarily have to be artistic to create one.

Scrapbooking can be as easy as putting photos and trinkets in a photo album. Helping your aging loved one create a scrapbook can help refresh their memory as well as keep their mind and hands busy.

Not sure where to start? We’ve outlined a few simple tips to get your scrapbooking going.

  • Get organized – To start, gather all of your materials. Put all of your photos in chronological order and lay out your scrapbooking paper, tape, and decorations. You can find scrapbooking material at your local craft store.
  • Pick a theme – Themes make scrapbooking easier. You can put all of your aging loved one’s wedding photos in one album, family photos in another, and so on. Some theme ideas are: growing up, vacations, holidays, etc.
  • Start a layout – Before you start gluing and taping, lay out the photos, postcards, tickets, etc. on the scrapbook paper. This will allow your aging loved one to rearrange items and use their motor skills more.
  • Share your artwork – The best part about creating a scrapbook is being able to share your work with others. Help your senior share their scrapbook with friends and families. You can take them to a senior community centre and let them share their life stories and memories.

Scrapbooking is all about preserving memories. While your aging loved one is looking at photos, they will more than likely start recalling memories and sharing stories with you! Enjoy these precious moments – and most importantly, write them down!
